Homegrown World Music Pedagogy: Creating Units Around Teacher-Collected Fieldwork
Faculty: Sarah Bartolome & Christopher Roberts • July 12-16, 2021 • 11:00am-12:30pm PDT
Selecting music that represents the cultures of the students in our classrooms is a hallmark of solid Kodály-inspired education. In this course, participants will collect a song from a student, family member, friend, or community member, to use as an anchor for a larger instructional unit related to that musical culture. Participants will then develop learning activities that feature additional musical examples and integrate cultural context. Inspired by World Music Pedagogy, this workshop-style course will feature faculty modeling, small group work, and individual feedback. We will explore issues of cultural appropriation, responsible use of repertoire, and the practical realities of implementation. The deliverable? One series of 3-5 lessons to use in your classroom in the coming year.
